Tanker Refurb
Wednesday, July 28 2010

Over the last couple of months the tanker has gone through a minor refurb. First members removed two of the seats in the rear of the cab to make room for a storage cabinet. Next the tanker went to Specialized Fire in Middletown to have some compartments changed around, added some new tools and the new storage cabinet installed. A couple of weeks later the tanker was out on training and when it got back to the station members noticed a lot of oil dumping out from the motor. This resulted in a $30,000.00 motor and transmission rebuild. Finally the "refurb" was finished last week when a new tarp was installed by Henderson Tarps of Middletown.

Ten Calls with a Fatal crash on 283
Sunday, July 25 2010

Today a powerful storm went through the area keeping the company busy. The first call came in with a pole leaning and wires down in front of Chief 54's residence on Colebrook Road. While operating at this location Engine 54-1 went to Locust Lane and Roundtop for a tree down blocking the roadway. Next was a report of a tree blocking route 230 in the 2000 block. Engine 54-1 found nothing and cleared the box. Next was for a tree on wires on Felker Road. Chief 54-2 arrived to find a tree on wires blocking the road. Fire Police set up barricades to block the road and units cleared. After a little break the next call was for Utility 54 and fire police to respond to assist Lancaster County in E-town Borough. Then Chief 54-2 went to check on wires down on Colebrook Road. Chief 2 arrived to find a pole sheered off from an accident that happened a couple days prior. Just as units were clearing the Colebrook call Utility 54 called Chief 54 and advised that they had a large black column of smoke from the area of 283 thinking that it was a residence that frequently burns along 283. They then came upon an accident with fire and entrapment. Despite the efforts of the crew on Utility 54 to extinguish the fire the driver succumbed from his injuries. A second vehicle with 5 patients was discovered up from the vehicle in the median strip. A small fire was handled by Engine 54's crew in the second vehicle. Crews assisted with knocking the fire down in the burning vehicle and assisting EMS with patient care at the other vehicle. Units remained on the scene to assist PSP with reconstruction. While operating here Chief 54-1 responded back to the Chief's house for another call reporting a pole down from earlier. Next came a reported vehicle fire on 283 West Bound just west of Tollhouse Road Chief 54-1 discovered a disabled vehicle, West Bound prior to 743. The occupants there didn't need FD services and the  box was in placed service. The final call for the night was a crash on 283 West bound between Vine Street and Tollhouse Road. Engine 54-1 arrived and assisted EMS with patient care and Chief 54-2 placed the box in service.

House Fire on Foxianna Road
Tuesday, July 20 2010

County dispatched Box 54-5 @ 12:45 for a reported house on fire. Engine 54 (Captain Naples) arrived on the scene with heavy smoke and fire showing from the front door. Crews pulled a CAF line to the front door and started to knock down the fire. Truck 88 arrived and positioned to set up. The truck crew assisted on the line and opened the roof. Engine 54-1 arrived and crew pulled a second CAF line to the rear of the structure. Crews did a great job of gaining control of the fire. It took about 350 gallons of water and 1 gallon of foam with engine 54's Compressed Air Foam System to knock the fire down. Command had additional units respond to the scene due to the temps in the mid 90's and high humidity. Crews waited for the Fire Marshals to investigate and then started to overhaul the structure.
